President John Dramani Mahama has presented truckloads of relief items to victims of the recent floods in Hohoe in the Volta Region, as government steps up support for affected communities.
The President made the presentation on Friday, October 2, when he visited Hohoe Zongo to assess the extent of the damage and commiserate with residents who were affected by the floods.
He expressed sympathy to the victims and assured them that government would continue to provide assistance as they recover from the disaster.
“We came here today to sympathise with Togbuiga, the Chiefs and the people who have been affected and we also brought a few items to donate,” President Mahama said.
He said the relief items were provided by the Presidency to support residents affected by the floods.
President Mahama also announced a pledge of 5,000 bags of cement from the owner of Dzata Cement to help rebuild homes that were destroyed or collapsed during the flooding.
“The owner of Dzata Cement, who happens to be my younger brother, has also promised 5,000 bags of cement to help the people whose houses have been destroyed,” he stated.
The President directed the Member of Parliament, Municipal Chief Executive and Volta Regional Minister to ensure that the relief items were distributed fairly to residents directly affected by the floods.
“We will leave it in the hands of the MP and the MCE and the Regional Minister to distribute these items fairly so that those who are affected are the ones who will receive them,” he said.
President Mahama commended traditional leaders, local authorities and government agencies, including the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), for their response to the flooding.
He also conveyed the sympathies of his wife, Lordina Mahama, to residents affected by the disaster.
The floods displaced over 5000 residents and destroyed homes and other property in parts of the municipality after continuous rainfall caused the River Dayi to overflow into low-lying communities.
The affected communities are Bla, Galikorpe, Zongo Nima, Martvin Down, Segbedenu, Water Ways Down, Kpoeta, Atabu, Kledzo, and Panic Site.
Preliminary figures from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) indicate that 5,140 people have been displaced, while 412 houses have been affected across 11 communities.
